After the success of the Denon PMA-2500NE, Denon now gives us it’s little brother, the Denon PMA-1600NE. The PMA-2500NE was a tremendously good performer with real high-end ambitions and the inclusion of a thoroughly modern and highly spec’d DAC board.
Thankfully the PMA-1600NE retains the excellent DAC board which means 32bit/384kHz PCM as well as DSD Streaming up to 11.2MHz. This should be all anyone needs both now and in the foreseeable future. What it also retains, is the exceptional dynamics, this is one very gutsy amplifier with real slam when needed.
So what are the differences I hear you say? Let’s start with the obvious, the case work is smaller, same beautiful design, simply shorter in stature. Less obvious, the PMA-1600NE uses a FL Display, the PMA-2500NE uses an OLED display. The power rating drops from 160 watts per channel into 4 ohms, to 140 watts per channel into 4 ohms.
While both amplifiers are dual mono in design, the PMA-1600NE has both left and right channel circuits on the same board where as the PMA-2500NE has separate boards which are mounted vertically on the internal heat sinks, but retains the separate transformers to supply the power. The PMA-1600NE is a very powerful amplifier and in use delivers incredible grip on the bass driver, with dynamics as stated previously that is nothing short of excellent.
There is one huge difference that will make those short on funds for the PMA-2500NE rejoice, as the PMA-1600NE offers by my reckoning about 90-95% of what the PMA-2500NE offers, for almost half the price, and that adds up to a real bargain in my view.
